Author Research

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947. King came from a broken home, which in some ways could be reasoning for his separation of families present in his novel "The Eyes of the Dragon". A need to feel okay about some things is expressed in some peoples work. This feeling of abandonment can be from Stephen King's constant need of a full set of parents. I am sure in this Stephen King feels strongly about showing the true need for a family just as he has with Thomas needing satisfaction from his father, King Roland. Stephen King became active in politics and seemed to have a conservative mind. This seems to humor me in the instance that Stephen King's work has anything but a conservative meaning. Stephen King supported the anit-war movement as well which is another weird case of irony because in this book, violence is present in multiple events. I am assuming that even though Stephen King seems to be some what of a Quaker, he also feels strongly about writing the exact opposite of his beliefs. From this I am concurring that Stephen King is a shy person, who does not want to express his true feelings. His inability to express what he truly feels is an indication of a lack of self confidence and self expression. Stephen King hides his true feelings by reverse psychology and talking and describing exactly what he hates. In an interview with Yankee magazine he said, "I'm leery [cautious] of thinking I'm somebody. Because nobody really is. Everybody is able to do something well, but in this country there's a premium [special value] put on stardom."( Stephen King Biography - family, children, name, story, school, mother, young, book, old, information, born http://www.notablebiographies.com/Ki-Lo/King-Stephen.html#ixzz1UUfhjh4N) Stephen King is a very humble man, and his stories seem to have great meanings. Stephen King wants people to learn more which is also a reason why he wrote his book "On Writing". This book tells about Stephen King and also the struggles he had to deal with. Once again Stephen King is writing about his feelings which also shows his true love for writing. I have looked all over the internet and very rarely do I find anything other than factual information about Stephen King. Stephen King is a man of mysteries that you can only find out about within his works. Most writer love the glory but Stephen King seems to be a little more on the reserved side. I find that he who is truly great does not need applaud only satisfaction from those he wants to please. I am surprised to find this information out, because I viewed Stephen King as an ego maniac, who was eager for attention from his horrific stories, but also happy to find out that he is a good man just trying to cover up his fears. This humble, yet artistic man has provided many scholarships for many different schools as well as donate to different charities. In return of not only his moral character but his ability to entertain, Stephen King has won many, well deserved awards.

Final

As I am looking back on this book, I become even more thankful for Stephens great detail, in a few amount of words. I do know that this may seem to be unimportant to some people but I am not a very good reader, and his simplification of even the most complicated events seem to make this an enjoyable reading. I do think that the suspense King wanted was definitely accomplished in making me want to read more find out what is really going on. Because of this book, I also seemed to change my personal beliefs on certain issues such as the "pride" circumstances in which I talked about in one of my past quotes. Also the theme of the story I chose, and created my self also spoke great measures to me. I sometimes am influenced by others feelings and opinions but this book just further encouraged me that as long as I stay true to myself and my priorities in life, then I am able to have an outcome I want. Good characteristics and good morals what not what conflict was about in this story but he did seem to play a great part in the outcome. I look at this book as a book of motivation and deem it good reading for anyone in need of a reality check. I also was in much amazement at the extensive use of different literary elements that King did use without so much of a hassle. This shows that the value of any type of reading or writing can be increased by uses of correct forms of writing. I learned much from this novel and most certainly plan on reading more of King's works.

So finally the climax of the story has begun when Flagg has discovered something is going on and he decides to check up on Peter. We feel suspense when Flagg knocks down the door and screams "Here I come dear Peter. To chop off your head." We know that Peter is trying his best to secure his knot for his napkin but unfortunately we also know that, yes the napkins were strong enough when Peter tested a short rope, but we also know that as the weight is spread through out a longer rope the rope will break. We want Peter to make it out alive but while we are wondering about the strength of the napkins, we are also curious as to if he will make it out before Flagg kills him. We become right in both cases. Flagg does come up but decides to allow Peter to be the cause of his own death. The rope made with his napkins, that I have declared as symbolic of his mother, does break, but his fall is cushioned by a pile of the napkins Dennis, Ben, and Naomi created for him. Peters mother was there supporting him the whole time and keeping him "alive". I am declaring the theme of this book to be "stay true to yourself, and let your character determine your faith". Peters good moral standings and great character allowed others to have faith in him and understand that he is not the killer. FLagg got exactly what he deserved and the "good man" came out on top.

King is a man of many words, and sometimes he likes to simplify stuff but other times he like to describe in great detail. King uses PATHOS, the device used to cloud our feelings of a character because of emotional standings, to create a turn around feeling on Thomas. I am assuming that this is foreshadowing a forgiveness between the brothers because just as a Hindu Proverb once said "Help your brother's boat across, and your own will reach the shore." This foreshadowing also shows the need of Thomas in some way because Peter in forgiving him, I believe may also expect some form of help from him. We the readers feel bad for Thomas because on page 333 King describes him as such a weak and innocent soul, we seem to forget the evil, and hope for a reuniting between the brothers. King also uses metaphors to keep our interest in this slightly boring book to keep our attention such as the one made by Flagg on page 336 between people and oxen. I do appreciate King for doing so...

Stephen King decided to use multiple forms of writing techniques and ways in these couple of pages. On page 286, a more poetic form of writing is used by King when the drunken Guard is singing a sweet melodic song about the different women he has dated. Alliteration is used in such phrases as " Marchy-Marchy-Melda", and "Darchy-Darchy-Darla". The Guard says these silly phrases in a rhyme and this tone of the guard allows me to feel a little less fearful of him. Dennis' dream of a candle blowing out, seems to foreshadow a death of Peter, because in the past we have described Peter has the "white light". As we all know though, you can light a fire just as easily as you can blow it out, so I am assuming that yes Peter will encounter a downfall to his escape, but he will "light the fire" again and all will be well. Another form of symbolism is used by the locket that Peter found in his room. The locket, at this time, is another representation of revenge for others. Valera, the guy who was wrongfully accused of murdering his wife, got his story out by this locket and hoped to eventually have revenge on Flagg by showing him that we know he killed his wife. The locket also represents revenge for Dennis as well against Flagg, because even though Flagg used him against his own friend, Peter, the locket contained a special note giving Dennis hope that all was okay. Dennis I believe will now be plotting with Peter for his escape and revenge against Flagg. This locket did more than anyone could have asked for.

The topic and main literary device of this section seems to be suspense. We begin to see a change when Peyna does decide to put away his pride and help Prince Peter and Dennis, but what leaves us wondering and in suspense is whether or not Peyna and Dennis will be able to help in time. This scene reminds me of Romeo and Juliet. Peter has decided that he will attempt his rope escape during the worst storm ever so that people can not see him. Even though he understands that this escape may be the death of him, he feels lonely and feels no other option, even though Peyna and Dennis are on their way to rescue. Peter does not know this and this keeps me, the reader, curious and eager to see what will actually be the outcome. I feel that the constant pace that Peter has been keeping, and the giving of the actual time of his escape is foreshadowing a close race to Peter's life. Romeo and Juliet had this same suspense and unfortunately ended in a tragedy. I am just hoping they hurry to Peter.

The Eyes of the Dragon Pages 221-248 August 7

In this section we learn of the brilliant plan that Peter has incorporated his napkins and dollhouse into. We see sheer brilliance in the fact that Peter uses the working dollhouse to weave together a rope from the napkins that he slowly pulls apart piece by piece. From this small rope Peter will hopefully escape the 300 foot high tower. In making this rope Peter remembers something that Yosef said about oxen pulling heavy bricks. Yosef said that the oxen has to use a harness because the ropes used to pull bricks have only a certain amount until they break. Not only was Yosef telling Peter factual information but he was also giving him a life lesson. On page 229 Yosef states that breaking strain "is a good thing for a Prince to know about, Peter. Chains break if you put on enough of a tug, and people do, too..." Yosef at the time was teaching the young prince that if you push people too far they will go off the edge. The breaking strain now becomes a symbol of the constant struggle Peter must keep in order to "make it work" with out pushing too far. In this case it is not only the breaking strain of the rope, but his own breaking strain. He must take it slow and not overwhelm himself, for even he might go over the edge. We also see a little bit of deja vu when Peter discover a locket that has a picture of a woman and note describing the set up of a man murdering his wife by Flagg. Peter has seen that Flagg has done this before and this revenge for this lost soul seems to be even more of a motivation for Peter to succeed.
