"Take my arm then," he said, "in case I stumble." This quote is showing the developing trust Thomas has for Flagg. Thomas does not want to become King and when he does he feels the need to have "help" in doing so, which essentially is exactly what Flagg wants. Thomas is trusting Flagg to catch him when he falls, but even though Flagg is holding him now, Thomas is in his hands and Flagg can drop him whenever he feels the need to. This betrayal is similar to the betrayal Ariel experienced with Ursala. Ursala told Ariel she would help her get legs but ended up taking her voice, and eventually her man! Flagg is soon to come to the point where he will take back what he needs and just like Ursala, leave Thomas out to die.
